Complete Chardham Yatra Guide

The Chardham Yatra is one of the most cherished journeys a traveller can make — a pilgrimage through the Himalayas to four sacred shrines. We have had the privilege of taking many groups on this route, and we know how much smoother the experience becomes with the right planning and the right vehicle. Here is our practical guide to doing the Chardham Yatra from Delhi.

The four dhams

The Chardham circuit in Uttarakhand covers four holy sites: Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna; Gangotri, near the origin of the Ganga; Kedarnath, the revered shrine of Lord Shiva; and Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Pilgrims traditionally visit them in that order, moving from west to east through some of the most beautiful mountain country in India.

The classic route and order

A typical journey begins in Delhi and heads to Haridwar or Rishikesh, the gateway to the hills. From there the route winds up to Barkot for Yamunotri, on to Uttarkashi for Gangotri, across to the Kedarnath valley, and finally to Badrinath before the long descent back. Two of the shrines, Yamunotri and Kedarnath, involve treks from the nearest road-head, while Gangotri and Badrinath are reachable almost right up to the temple by road.

How many days you'll need

We usually recommend planning for around ten to twelve days from Delhi to complete all four dhams comfortably. Rushing the Himalayas is never a good idea — the roads are mountainous, the weather changes quickly, and the treks take time. A sample outline looks like this:

  • Day 1: Delhi to Haridwar / Barkot

  • Day 2: Barkot — Yamunotri trek and back

  • Day 3: Barkot to Uttarkashi

  • Day 4: Uttarkashi — Gangotri darshan and back

  • Day 5: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

  • Day 6: Trek to Kedarnath

  • Day 7: Kedarnath to Guptkashi

  • Day 8: Guptkashi to Badrinath

  • Day 9: Badrinath to Rudraprayag / Joshimath

  • Day 10–11: Return to Haridwar and on to Delhi

Many groups add an extra day for rest or as a buffer against weather, which we always encourage.

Why a tempo traveller is ideal — and which size

For a group, a tempo traveller is the most comfortable and economical way to do this yatra. You travel together, keep your luggage in one place, and have an experienced driver handling the demanding mountain roads. For Himalayan routes we generally suggest a smaller, more agile vehicle such as a 9 or 12-seater, which handles narrow bends and steep climbs far better than a large coach. Our Delhi to Chardham tempo traveller packages come with drivers who know these roads well — which, on a journey like this, matters more than almost anything else. And if the Kedarnath trek feels daunting, helicopter services operate from nearby helipads during the season; we can plan your itinerary around them so the rest of your group travels in comfort.

Essential tips before you go

A few things make a real difference on the Chardham Yatra:

  • Register in advance. The Uttarakhand government requires online Chardham Yatra registration. Complete it before you travel and carry your confirmation with you.

  • Pick the right season. May to June and September to October are the best windows. Avoid the peak monsoon weeks of July and August, when landslides and road closures are common.

  • Prepare for altitude. Kedarnath and Badrinath sit at high elevation. Acclimatise, stay hydrated, and carry any personal medication. Check with your doctor first if you have health concerns.

  • Pack warm. Even in summer, mountain mornings and evenings are cold. Bring layers, a raincoat, and sturdy walking shoes for the treks.

  • Carry essentials. Keep cash, identity documents, a basic first-aid kit, and chargers handy, as mobile connectivity can be patchy in the hills.
